Herod Antipas was a son of Herod the Great. He governed Galilee and Perea during Jesus’ youth and ministry (4 BC to AD 39). See Map. He constructed the city of Tiberias as his capital. Jesus did not trust Antipas, who refused to pay him for his deceased father’s work. Herod was later responsible for the execution of John the Baptist. He briefly interrogated Jesus during his arrest. See Jesus Before Herod.
