The Sanhedrin were a judicial assembly of Jewish elders. At the time of Jesus, they functioned as separate bodies at both local (Lesser) and central (Greater) levels. The Jerusalem Sanhedrin was a central body with great authority, acting as a supreme court for all Israel.
