Turkestan (or Turkistan) is a region of Central Asia roughly corresponding to the modern countries of Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It also includes East Turkestan–the Xinjiang region of western China. The area is now inhabited mostly by Turkic peoples who migrated from South Siberia and Mongolia in the 5th to 16th centuries.
