Contemporary science includes only eight planets in the solar system. This may be due to recent changes in the definition of a planet (which redefined Pluto as a dwarf planet) or that some have not yet been observed. For example, astronomers are now investigating the potential existence of a hypothetical planet called “Planet Nine.” See also What Is a Planet?
