Alexandria

In Jesus’ time, Alexandria was a world center of trade and learning. It had the greatest library in the world with nearly a million manuscripts, and it housed a university of fine art, science, and literature (museum area). Its university has served as a model for the modern university campus. Note that the book’s account disagrees with some statements in Wikipedia. See At Alexandria. See map.
