James Zebedee, the third apostle, was a fisherman of Bethsaida, as was his younger brother, John. He was prone to anger but was also a well-balanced thinker and planner. Of all the twelve, he came the nearest to grasping the real import and significance of Jesus’ teaching. He was the first apostle to experience martyrdom, being put to death by Herod Agrippa.
