Philip the Tetrarch (26 BC to AD 33) was a son of Herod the Great (the Idumean) and a brother of Herod Antipas. He inherited the lands north and east of the Jordan River, a region called Batanea in Roman times. Philip allowed Jesus and the apostles to preach in his domains and they often retreated to this area for safety, often gathering at Magadan Park. See map.
