Judea is a Greek and Roman adaptation of the Hebrew name Yehudah, a name used for the ancient Kingdom of Judah. It was later used (in English) for the hilly interior of Mandatory Palestine, which roughly corresponds to the southern part of the contemporary West Bank. The region was ruled by Herod I until 4 BC, followed by his son Archelaus until AD 6, and then by Roman prefects until AD 41. See Map.
