Herod the Great (72 – 4 BC) was a Jewish king of Judea under the Romans. He is known for his building projects, including the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Details of his life were recorded by Josephus. Fearing a Messiah, he ordered the Massacre of the Innocents (see also Herod Acts). Three sons ruled after him: Archelaus ruled Judea for two years, Philip ruled Batanea until 34 AD, and Herod Antipas overlooked Galilee and Perea to 39 AD. See map.
