Herod Archelaus was a son of Herod the Great and brother to Herod Antipas and Herod Philip. He was known for his cruelty, being responsible for killing 3,000 Jews in a raid on the Temple in Jerusalem. Nonetheless, he was later given rule over Samaria, Judea, and Idumea after the death of his father in 4 AD. He ruled for nine years until eventually removed by Augustus because of his continued mistreatment of the Jews.
